Start your engines…the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum is now looking for volunteers. If you have a passion for history, motor racing, and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, consider joining our volunteer team.
As a volunteer at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum, you’ll play a key role in connecting guests to the Museum’s mission of celebrating and preserving the history behind the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Indianapolis 500. We’re seeking volunteers who will engage, inspire, and educate guests of all ages and knowledge levels.

Gallery Guide
Are you enthusiastic about engaging with others and sharing stories? As a Gallery Guide, you will be at the forefront of creating memorable guest experiences at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum. Volunteers in this role will work directly with visitors to spark curiosity, share insights about motorsports history, and guide them through our exhibits. You’ll ask and answer questions, facilitate engaging conversations, and direct visitors to key artifacts while helping the Museum gather feedback about visitor interests.

Must attend a volunteer orientation and both online and on-site training sessions
Innovation Workshop Volunteer
Are you curious how science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics (STEAM) connect to the world of racing? As an Innovation Workshop Volunteer, you’ll work directly with the STEAM Facilitator to engage small groups and families in hands-on discovery. Volunteers in this role will help visitors learn and grow through creative challenges and engaging activities designed to uncover the connections between STEAM concepts and the excitement of motorsports.
From guiding guests through interactive experiments to sparking curiosity about the physics of speed or engineering design, this position is ideal for someone who loves teaching, problem-solving, and fostering creativity in a dynamic and interactive environment.

Qualifying Zone Volunteer
Are you passionate about creating fun, hands-on experiences? As a Qualifying Zone Volunteer, you’ll play a key role in the most interactive space of the Museum. Volunteers in this role will engage guests—especially younger audiences—in exploring racing concepts like team dynamics, strategies, and skills through gamified, hands-on activities.
This role is ideal for someone who thrives on bringing energy and excitement to every interaction, enjoys problem-solving, and can adapt to dynamic situations. Whether you’re explaining a concept, troubleshooting an interactive exhibit, or cheering on a young visitor’s “race,” you’ll be at the heart of the Museum’s most action-packed zone.

Visitor Support Volunteer
Do you enjoy greeting and connecting with guests? As a Visitor Support volunteer, you will be a visible presence to our guests throughout the Museum. Volunteers in this role will be answering questions, directing guests where to go, and helping to reduce crowded areas by guiding guests to other sections of the Museum.

How do I apply?

What are the volunteer requirements?
We are looking for friendly individuals who are comfortable interacting with guests of all ages. Volunteers must be 18 or older, and serve a minimum one-year commitment with two shifts per month (shifts are three hours). Flexible scheduling options are available for both weekends and weekdays, and mornings and afternoons. Volunteers will also need to pass a limited criminal history background check, attend a volunteer orientation, and participate in both online and on-site training sessions based on volunteer assignment.
What is the volunteer time commitment?
Volunteers should be available for 72 hours minimum per year, averaging two consistent shifts per month, in addition to completing online and on-site orientation and training sessions.
How long is a shift?
An average shift is three hours.
Is there a cost associated with volunteering?
No, all necessary screening, training materials, uniform shirt, I.D. Badge and lanyard are provided by the Museum. You will need to wear black pants and closed-toe shoes as part of your required uniform.
Can I help take care of the historic cars or artifacts?
Not at this time. Please consider volunteering in another area. We may offer additional volunteer roles in the future.
Can I volunteer on the weekends only?
Yes, weekend volunteer shifts (morning and afternoon) are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Can I volunteer during the summer only?
Not at this time. The Museum is currently looking for volunteers who can make a one-year commitment due to the amount of training needed.
Do you offer one-time volunteer opportunities?
Not at this time. However, if you would like to be considered for a future assignment, please email kkraemer@imsmuseum.org to be added to the interest list.
Do you offer court-ordered community service work?
No, we do not offer court-ordered community service.
