Ford Wilson Race of Champions

Overview

The Ford Wilson Race of Champions soap box derby provides children and adults with developmental, cognitive, and physical impairments the opportunity to become a racing champion.

The Race of Champions was founded in 1998 by Ford Wilson, who wanted to provide all children, regardless of abilities, the chance to race. In 2010, it was renamed The Ford Wilson Race of Champions in honor of his memory and dedication. In 2024, the Museum took over the operations.

The goal of this community initiative is to provide a safe, unique, and fun experience and to empower those who may otherwise never know what it feels like to cross the finish line as a champion.

Be a participant

The Ford Wilson Race of Champions is held annually at the Wilbur Shaw Memorial Soap Box Derby Hill in Indianapolis. It’s the longest soap box derby track in the country, measuring 1,000 feet. Each participant will be paired up with a professional race car driver, who will take them down the hill in a specially constructed two-seater soap box derby car.

Sponsorship

The Ford Wilson Race of Champions relies on the generosity of corporate partners and individual donors to provide this experience to the racers, families, and attendees at no cost. In addition, we’re looking for support to maintain and improve the fleet of six custom-built two-seater soap box derby cars.
