Photography & Videography Policy
To protect the safety of the IMS Museum collection and our guests, the following guidelines must be followed when photographing in the Museum.
General Guests
Photography of exhibitions, displays, and interactives is limited to personal use only. Social media uploading of personal photography is encouraged using the hashtag #imsmuseum.
General guests are not permitted to use flash photography, monopods, tripods, or lights in the Museum.
Photography must be conducted without disruption to Museum operations or limitation to the accessibility of exhibitions, entrances/exits, doorways, or pathways. Climbing on displays and car platforms is prohibited.
The use of drones is prohibited at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Media
Media may photograph or film within designated areas of the IMS Museum for the purpose of news coverage. All members of the media must make arrangements with the Marketing & Communications Department by emailing Kelsey Burr at kburr@imsmuseum.org or calling 463.244.2974 before their arrival.
Photo/Video Shoots
Anyone wishing to conduct photo or video shoots at the IMS Museum, such as wedding and engagement shoots, family photos, etc., must purchase a single-day photo pass a minimum of 48 hours before the shoot. Photo passes do not include admission to the Museum, which must be purchased separately. Please email kburr@imsmuseum.org to secure your photo pass.
Fees and Timeline:
A single-day photo pass fee of $25 covers up to two (2) named photographers from a single company and up to 10 individuals from a single client group (e.g., no more than 10 individuals for a family portrait session).
Payment of photo pass must be completed before your scheduled session.
Policy:
Shoots are not permitted inside the Starting Line Experience, Qualifying Zone, or Penske Gallery. Shoots are not permitted outside of the IMS Museum on the grounds of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, including as participants of any Museum-held track tours.
Please be prepared to show your photo pass (will appear as a “ticket”) when you arrive and throughout your time at the Museum.
Purchase of a photo pass does not authorize the use of drones and will not be permitted for the safety and security of other guests.
Students may obtain a free photo pass only for the completion of class assignments by emailing museum@imsmuseum.org and providing a valid student ID. A maximum of ten (10) free passes will be permitted per calendar year.
Items on display may be protected by copyright. Photography and videography shoots are intended for private, noncommercial use only. Photos and video footage may not be reproduced, published or otherwise commercially exploited in any manner to protect the rights of the creator(s).
Shoots involving nudity are not permitted.
IMS Museum reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to withhold and/or withdraw permission to shoot on its premises. IMS Museum staff has the authority to approach anyone suspected of conducting a photography or videography shoot and to enforce these rules. Failure to comply may result in removal from the premises. Please follow any verbal instructions you are given by IMS Museum staff.
Licensing and Location Shoots
IMS Museum welcomes proposals for commercial and professional location (photography and videography) shoots in the Museum. The Marketing & Communications Department will work with your team to assess applications, plan logistics, and oversee on-site production. For additional information, please contact Kelsey Burr at kburr@imsmuseum.org.
