Code of conduct policies for ims museum guests

The mission of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum (IMS Museum) is to celebrate and preserve the history behind the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Indianapolis 500. With this, the IMS Museum is committed to providing an enjoyable experience for everyone. We ask guests to follow the listed IMS Museum Code of Conduct for their own safety and enjoyment, the safety and enjoyment of other guests, and the security and protection of the Museum’s collection and exhibitions.

Prohibited Behaviors
  • Do not touch vehicles or artifacts in the IMS Museum. Do not enter or attempt to enter vehicles on display.

  • Offensive, abusive, or threatening language or behavior directed at other guests, IMS Museum staff, or volunteers.

  • Tampering with, defacing, damaging, destroying, and/or removing any Museum property, including exhibit components and artifacts, is prohibited. Any behavior compromising the IMS Museum’s collection or Museum-loaned items, whether on display or in IMS Museum collection storage areas, is also forbidden. The Museum reserves the right to remove perpetrators after one warning.

  • Any behavior that compromises the safety of oneself or others, including other guests, IMS Museum staff, and the collection, is prohibited. Activities such as running, rough play, and disruptive behavior are not allowed.

  • Use of hate language or symbolism, including expressions aimed at race, nationality, gender identity, sexuality, religion, age, education, or physicality.

  • Unauthorized distribution of pamphlets or other literature.

  • Deliberately obstructing or hindering the performance of duties by IMS Museum staff.

  • Gambling, selling, soliciting, or campaigning.

  • Indecent exposure, or sexual acts or behavior.

  • The use of tobacco, smoking (including electronic cigarettes, vaporizers or similar products).

  • Eating and/or drinking in exhibits or other designated prohibited areas.

  • Any behavior identified by IMS Museum staff as a threat to the safety of guests, IMS Museum staff, and/or property.

  • Charging phones or other electronic devices in unauthorized locations inside the IMS Museum is prohibited.

Indianapolis Motor Speedway Prohibited Items

  • Aerosol cans (Sunscreen excluded)

  • Amplified voice devices that cause disruptions to the event

  • Animals (except service animals trained to do work or perform tasks for an individual with a disability)

  • Bicycles (guests may use dedicated bicycle parking structures at Gates 1, 6, & 9)

  • Coolers larger than 18” x 15” x 15”

  • DRONES, or unmanned aerial systems

  • Fireworks and flares

  • Flagpoles

  • Glass containers

  • Golf carts, ATVs, scooters, minibikes, roller blades, skateboards, skates, pogo sticks, and hover boards

  • Illegal drugs and substances or drug paraphernalia (including without limitation marijuana)

  • Items restricted by local, state or federal law

  • Lasers of any kind

  • Offensive or obscene materials (e.g., flags, signs, clothing)

  • Soliciting of any kind (including goods, materials, services, or ticket scalping)

  • Scaffolding or platforms

  • Selfie sticks

  • Stickers

  • Trampolines and swimming pools

  • Weapons of any type, including knives, firearms, and ammunition

  • Any other items not mentioned that may pose a safety hazard or diminish the enjoyment of the event by other guests may be refused at the discretion of security and management. These items are subject to change without notice. There are no provisions for checking and holding prohibited items. Prohibited items may not be left at or around the gates. Items left unattended will be removed and discarded.

Additionally, the IMS Museum prohibits:

  • Bags larger than 13x15x6

  • Coolers of any kind/size

  • Carry-ins beverages, other than bottled water

  • Wagons

  • Bag chairs/camp chairs

  • Canopies

All children under the age of 16 must have an adult accompanying them. Field trips and study groups must provide adequate adult chaperones per student group.

The Museum requires all guests to wear shirts, pants, and shoes to enter. The IMS Museum reserves the right to deny admission to or remove any person wearing attire or visible tattoos that are considered inappropriate.

Any video, photographs, and recordings taken on Museum grounds shall be for private, noncommercial use only unless approved by the Museum. Photography is prohibited in areas designated by the Museum. Museum officials/staff reserve the right to request images be deleted if they are in restricted areas or other designated situations.

We welcome all ADA-recognized service animals. However, Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the IMS Museum prohibit pets or emotional support animals.

The IMS Museum permits only water with sealable lids in the galleries and display areas. Food and beverages are available for purchase and can only be consumed in the museum’s Track Lounge.

Please leave bags larger than 13x15x6 at home.  Coolers of any size are prohibited. Courtesy lockers are available at the Welcome Center to hold larger bags and other belongings during your visit. Upon arrival, please see an IMS Museum Welcome Center staff member to request accommodation for an oversized diaper or medical bag. During gated admission days at IMS, a courtesy Cooler and Backpack Drop Zone is available to the East of the museum’s entrance. The Museum is not responsible for lost or stolen items.

Smoking (including electronic cigarettes, vaporizers, or similar products) is strictly prohibited inside the IMS Museum. However, IMS permits smoking 20 feet away from buildings, seating entrances, and infield viewing mounds.
