1938 Bowes Seal Fast Spcl.

Driver: Louis Meyer

This car, which housed an eight-cylinder, 180-cubic-inch supercharged Winfield engine, was built for the Bowes Seal Fast Company in 1938 by Myron Stevens. It was driven in 1938 and 1939 by Louis Meyer, who at the time was the only three-time winner of the “500.” In 1939, he almost became a four-time winner, leading as late as Lap 182, and was chasing eventual winner Wilbur Shaw when he crashed with just three laps remaining. Having decided to retire, Meyer then turned the car over to Rex Mays, who finished second in 1940 and 1941, winning the pole position in both years.

Adoption cost: $1,000
