About the Collections

When the Museum opened in 1956, it was home to a few vintage race cars and memorabilia associated with the Indianapolis 500. Since then, the Museum’s collection has grown. We are proud to be the caretakers of American open wheel racing history. Our collection consists of 55,000+ objects including: more than 300 vehicles; engine and automotive parts; 150 helmets; 85 pairs of goggles; over 80 fire suits; 200 works of art; historic posters and prints; thousands of photographs, slides and negatives; more than two million feet of film; DVDs, VHS and audio tapes; blueprints; timing and scoring records; more than 2,500 race programs; 95 scrapbooks; hundreds of tickets, press kits and newspapers; and more than 500 awards and trophies from races across the globe. The Museum is also home of the United States Auto Club (USAC) records.
