1982 Camaro Pace Car
66th Running of the Indianapolis 500
After a thirteen-year hiatus from the race, two specially-prepared, third-generation Camaros were built by Chevrolet to pace in 1982. Each used an aluminum 5.7-liter V8, mated with a three-speed automatic transmission and, for the first time, featured a yellow light bar instead of the rear-mounted yellow flags at the rear of the car. Former “500” winner Jim Rathmann once again paced the field to the green flag.
Along with the two specially-prepared pace cars, Chevrolet offered to the public a total of 6,360 silver and blue “Z28 Commemorative Edition” cars with optional Indianapolis 500 graphics. Commemorative editions came with a 5.0-Liter iron block V8 with a crossfire or carburetor ignition and a choice of a three-speed automatic, or four-speed manual transmission.
